Teaching and Learning
My role as a technology integration specialist is unique as I perform a variety of duties on a daily basis. Collaboration, coaching, and modeling are key to success in my position as they promote a meaningful connection between technology, curriculum, and student learning.
Collaboration
I collaborate with teachers, coaches, and specialists throughout the lesson planning process. I meet with teachers and start with the end goal in mind. What do we want students to achieve during the lesson or unit? Then, I work backwards suggesting technology tools and resources that would enhance the lesson and provide additional support for students to reach that goal.
Coaching
I also serve as a technology coach and mentor teachers to provide guidance, training, and resources to strengthen the overall classroom experience. Through this work, teachers identify areas of need through dialogue, reflection, and observations. Then, we work together to build on our strengths and grow as an educator. I may suggest or provide professional development or work directly with the teacher and students in the classroom by co-teaching and modeling.
Modeling
My favorite days are the ones spent in classrooms working directly with students and teachers. Whether from lesson planning collaboration or coaching conversations, I will identify lessons where teachers may benefit from additional support. I will lead the lesson as teachers take note of technology integration strategies. My goal is that through this modeling, teachers begin to feel more comfortable and independent integrating technology.
Below are examples of lessons I've designed and implemented in the elementary setting, My philosophy behind these lessons is strategic. First, these lessons are closely aligned with curriculum objectives. Technology integration is not about using the latest and greatest. Instead, we use technology to amplify a specific goal.
My goal is to also use technology in the classroom for creation rather than consumption. All too often we see students engaging with technology in isolation. The lessons I've designed push teachers and students to see technology as a powerful tool that enhances critical thinking and collaboration and often times asks students to create an original work.
