First Grade Science
Natural Resources Around the World
Grade: First Grade
Subject: Science
App: Nearpod
Student Objective: Students will be able to locate and describe natural resources around the world.
Reflection: Before designing this lesson, teachers were looking for a way for students to engage with a variety of natural resources from around the world. I decided to create a lesson using Nearpod which breaks down the classroom walls and takes students around the world with virtual field trips.
The first grade students visited the Great Barrier Reef, the pyramids of Egypt, the redwood forest, and Machu Picchu to explore natural resources and their importance. Each student had an iPad and was sent an individual copy of the Nearpod lesson (linked below). Using Nearpod on the iPads was a hit as the field trips adapt as the students turn, flip, and zoom on the iPads.
I took this lesson a step further and included a cross-curricular objective that explored geography and the Earth's land. After experiencing each field trip, students had to use clues to guess where in the world we were. A modern day Carmen Sandiego!
